But if you're planning a trip to Kerala and you're confused about which areas to visit, we recommend Alleppey, also popularly known as Alappuzha. The city of Alleppey is known as the cleanest city in India.

Backwaters means houseboats, a houseboat vacation is a joy to remember for a lifetime.
You will find many of these stationary boat-houses and cruise around Alleppey.
What to see in Alappuzha
The city itself, on closer inspection, does not have much to offer, except the lighthouse where you can climb to enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the area and its huge and desolate beach (Alappuzha Beach), not particularly suitable for bathroom, but very frequented by the Indians especially for walks at sunset.
In the area of Mararikulam you can instead relax in the sun and swim at the beautiful Marari Beach, which is however the same beach of Alappuzha that continues on this whole stretch of coast, only 12 km further north, or to Andhakaranazhi Beach, even further north along highway 66.
Around Alapphuza you can visit the Revi Karuna Karan Memorial Museum as well as some Christian churches.
Experience in backwaters in Alappuzha
But tourists are mainly attracted to Alappuzha's backwaters.
The inland water system is spread over a large part of Kerala with about 900 km of navigable canals and in particular in the area of Alleppey / Alapphuza.
You can choose to rent a houseboat for couples or larger groups or make simple cruises to / from Kollam, which is 85 km further south. The one-way trip takes 8 hours.
Alternatively, you can always take an excursion to one of the many villages that overlook the canals also by canoe, by ferry or by private boats.
In general, among the most interesting villages around Alapphuza we point out Karumadikkuttan, 3 km east of Ambalapuzha, famous for its 10th-century Buddha statue of the Buddha and Champakulam, where an ancient market is held (known as Kalloorkkadu angadi). Here is also the church of St. Mary Forane.
